7 Things I Wish I Knew 15 Years Ago About Managing Time Of Interior Design
If I could turn back time, these are the 7 things I wish I had known about time management in interior design.
(It would have saved me a lot of time and effort)
1. Multitasking does not work
When trying to work on multiple projects at the same time, you have to constantly switch back and forth between them.
It’s like trying to watch two movies on different TV channels at the same time by switching back and forth between them.
Stop multitasking immediately.
2. The safety time buffer can be a time eater
Prakinson’s Law states that a task always takes all the time allotted to it.
Interior design consists of several dozen tasks in the queue. If you add a safety buffer to each of these tasks, the deadline becomes ridiculously long.
Use the critical chain method and add a safety buffer only between the last task and the deadline
3. Pause saves time
When designing interiors, you have to make hundreds, if not thousands, of decisions. Each decision gradually reduces your ability to make the next decision, to the point of creative gridlock.
Take a break. Contrary to appearances, it will help you complete the project faster.
4. Pay attention to the time of greatest creativity
Our creative resources are consumed even when we are not working. What will you wear, what will you eat for breakfast, what else should you do before you go to work.
You make hundreds of micro decisions before you sit down at your desk.
Be a creator in the morning and a manager in the afternoon
This pattern works for 99% of the population. Stop kidding yourself.
5. Leverage with Pareto principle
You get 80% of the impact with 20% of the effort. Organize your to-do list according to this principle. Ask yourself:
What task can I do today that will bring me significantly closer to completing the most urgent project?
6. Make it a habit to choose your MIT
With the above information in mind, select your most important task of the day. Keep two rules in mind:
- You do not have to reach your MIT, just pick it.
- You do not have to choose the right task, just choose something.
It is important to build a habit first.
7. Set your MIB every working day
Knowing how limited your creative resources are, set aside a most important block of time each workday to implement MIT.
Remove distractions and notifications and make sure no one disturbs you.
