5 things I would have done differently to become a professional interior designer faster using SketchUp

I started designing interiors with SketchUp over 15 years ago.

Since then I’ve seen

• hours of tutorials

• numbers of add-ons

• countless components

and created an enormous amount of designs.

If I had to do it all over again, here are 5 things I would do differently.

#1 Do not create technical documentation in another CAD program.

I thought this was a good idea.

It is exactly the opposite.

It complicates, hinders and prolongs the whole process.

Start creating technical drawings in LayOut right away.

# 2 Instead of storing components locally, create an online database.

I really thought this would help me with my work.

It didn’t.

It is better to save them in the 3D Warehouse. This way you can

• access them everywhere

• easily browse them

• free up storage space

# 3 Develop your own templates.

One of my biggest mistakes was delaying the creation of consistent templates.

I should not have put it off.

Create a consistent template system is the first step to:

• save time

• make fewer mistakes

• work more efficiently

# 4 Do not create unnecessary technical documentation.

Everyone told me to create abundant technical documentation.

Boy were they wrong.

It was not only a huge waste of time, but also a huge amount of errors.

I could have saved myself a lot of trouble if I had not done it.

#5 Remember to keep your technical documentation simple.

It took me many years to understand that simplifying technical documentation is critical.

Do not feel the need to emulate other interior designers.

Just focus on simplifying the technical documentation.

TL; DR: 5 things I would have done differently to become a professional interior designer faster

• Create documentation in LayOut

• Save components to 3D Warehouse

• Develop your templates

• Do not create unnecessary drawings

• Simplify the technical documentation
